In 1997 when Mr. Madhu retired from BP ( British petroleum Dubai ) and came back to Palakkad, he had an intention of doing some social work .After settling down he saw a small write up in an Indian express calling for people for training in Alzheimer's disease at Eranakulam. He attended the course for one month and came to know the importance of care giving for Alzheimer's Patients. Then he along with Doc. Sivathanu Pillai ( Psychiatrist Vennakkara ) and some other well wishers formed Palakkad Alzheimer's Society in 1997 .
At the time very few people knew what is Alzheimer's disease. So Palakkad Alzheimer's Charitable Society and started giving classes to the rural Health workers and anganwadi teachers , explaining what the society could do to give care to Alzheimer's patients .Then ‘ Thanmathra ’ cinema was released and Alzheimer's diseases was widely publicized . So many people were asking for help and Palakkad Alzheimer's society formed a charitable trust called ' Palakkad Alzheimer's charitable trust ' in 2001.
In 2001 the trust was registered in Palakkad and 1.25 Acres of land was purchased in the name of Palakkad Alzheimer's charitable trust. and started Karunya Geriatric Care Centre, working in the field of care giving to destitute Old people in Palakkad district. First 4 rooms were constructed. Then depending on the availability of funds new additional buildings were added up .The present Palakkad Alzheimer's charitable trust and the unit of Karunya Geriatric care center are the Achievement of the trust over a period of 20 Years .
Kodumba Panchayat - Once the land was purchased, the Trust obtained Kodumba Panchayat’s permission to construct the first building of 4 rooms in 2002 and completed the project in 2004. The then District Collector Usha Titus inaugurated the first building on 24.8.2004
When all the rooms were occupied, in 2006, additional 4 rooms were constructed on top of the existing building. Since this was an Old Age home run by a Charitable organization, Kodumba Panchayat exempted Karunya from paying House Tax.
When the demand for admission increased, in 2012 an extension for a new block was planned and completed in 2014 keeping the Orphanage Control Board specification of space requirement for one person and separation of Male and Female residents.
In 2015 the shed in between the two residential buildings was demolished and an additional construction of 2500 Sq.Ft – Dining Hall, Kitchen, Store Room and wash area – started and finished in 2016.
